Early Life and Freedom Struggle

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. His father, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, was a school teacher and a poet. Vajpayee’s foray into national activism began during his student days, leading to his arrest during the historic **Quit India Movement** of 1942. He was an accomplished poet, a passionate journalist, and a founding member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951.

Historic UNGA Speech (1977)

As the External Affairs Minister in the Morarji Desai cabinet, Vajpayee created history in 1977. He became the first person to deliver a speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in Hindi, elevating the language to a global diplomatic stage and earning widespread national acclaim.

Tenures as Prime Minister and Pokhran-II

Vajpayee served as the Prime Minister of India three times (for 13 days in 1996, 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and a full term from 1999 to 2004). Under his leadership, India successfully conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in May 1998, establishing the nation as a full nuclear weapons state despite intense international economic sanctions. He also effectively led the nation to victory during the 1999 Kargil War.

Development and Educational Reforms

His administration launched the ambitious Golden Quadrilateral project, a massive highway network connecting India's major metropolitan cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata). He also introduced the revolutionary Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in 2001, making free elementary education a fundamental right for children aged 6 to 14.

Highest Civilian Honor and Legacy

Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on 16 August 2018 at AIIMS, New Delhi, following a prolonged illness. In 2015, he was awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna. To honor his legacy of clean and accountable administration, his birth anniversary (December 25) is celebrated nationwide every year as Good Governance Day (Sushasan Divas).

I have presented some verses of Atal Bihari Ji's poems before you-
