Arun Jaitley was born on 28 December 1952 in New Delhi. His father, Maharaj Kishen Jaitley, was a prominent lawyer. He studied at St. Xavier's School, New Delhi, and graduated with a commerce degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). He later obtained his law degree from the University of Delhi, where he also served as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1974.
Before his full-time commitment to politics, Arun Jaitley was a highly successful **Senior Advocate** in the Supreme Court of India. In 1989, he was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India. He represented various high-profile corporate clients and government bodies throughout his legal career.
-Arun Jaitley served in multiple crucial ministerial capacities under Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi. During his tenure as the Union Finance Minister (2014–2019), he spearheaded monumental economic structural transformations. He played a central role in implementing the historic Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017 and passing the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in 2016. He also briefly held the portfolios of Defense, Corporate Affairs, and Information & Broadcasting.
Apart from politics and law, he was a passionate sports administrator. He served as the President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) from 1999 to 2013, contributing heavily to cricket infrastructure in Delhi. In honor of his contributions, the iconic Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi was renamed the Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2019.
Arun Jaitley passed away on 24 August 2019 at AIIMS, New Delhi, due to health complications. In recognition of his distinguished public service to the nation, he was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 2020.
