Organisations such as Culture Machine, a Mumbai based Media Company is offering its women staff paid ‘first day of periods’ leave. Cummins India Limited, a leading manufacturer of diesel and natural gas engines has established a technical college exclusively for women. However, changes must take place at the level of policy making to achieve gender equality in corporate organisations in a country like India. One of the ways this could be achieved is by planning long-term gender diversity policies.
The questions any organisation must regularly review are: what is the ratio of women at the top of the organisation? How many of these women leaders are involved in major decision making? Another aspect one must keep in mind is that women leaders will emerge only if proper mentorship is available in the company. A company should be gender-friendly and women employees must be assisted, provided ample opportunities to flourish so that they can move to the top ranks of the organisation. In short, women leaders won’t just emerge out of nowhere but will be a product of a gender-sensitive system.
One of the problems many corporate institutions still face is the absence of equal pay for women for the same tasks. A company must make it their policy to bridge the gender pay gap. Only policies such as these will contribute towards empowering more women as future leaders in the corporate setup and create an equal work culture.
